What's Japan Rail Pass?
The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is an exclusive and convenient option for tourists visiting Japan, allowing unlimited travel on most Japan
Railways (JR) trains, including the high-speed Shinkansen (bullet trains), as well as select buses and ferries operated by JR. The pass
is an excellent value for travelers who plan to explore multiple cities or regions, offering significant savings compared to buying
individual tickets.
The Japan Rail Pass is a special rail pass available only to foreign tourists on a temporary visitor visa. The pass provides unlimited
travel on most JR-operated services, including:
・JR Shinkansen Trains:
Nearly all JR-operated Shinkansen trains are covered, with a few exceptions. Pass holders can ride the Hikari, Kodama, and Sakura trains
on major lines such as the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen. However, it does not cover the fastest types of trains (like the Nozomi
and Mizuho trains).
・JR Local and Rapid Trains:
Local and rapid trains across Japan, as long as they are operated by JR, are fully covered.
・JR Buses:
Select JR buses within cities are available to pass holders.
・JR Miyajima Ferry:
The ferry to Miyajima Island near Hiroshima is included.
・Limited Express and Express Trains:
Most JR-operated limited express and express trains are covered by the pass.
The JR Pass is valid for 7, 14, or 21 consecutive days from the activation date and comes in two classes: Ordinary (standard class) and
Green (first-class seating).
How to buy Japan Rail Pass
The JR Pass can be purchased either before arriving in Japan (recommended for convenience and price) or at select JR stations within Japan.
Here’s how the purchasing process works:
1. Purchase Before Arrival:
Traditionally, the JR Pass could only be bought outside of Japan from travel agencies or official JR Pass websites. When purchased abroad,
you will receive an exchange voucher, sometimes called an "exchange order," that you must exchange for the actual JR Pass at a JR office in
Japan. This voucher is valid for three months, so be sure to exchange it for your pass within that period after arriving in Japan.
2. Purchase Within Japan:
As of recent years, tourists can buy the JR Pass at certain JR stations across Japan, including major hubs like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya,
and Sapporo. However, buying the pass within Japan is generally more expensive than purchasing it in advance.
3. Requirements:
To buy the JR Pass, you must show your passport with a temporary visitor visa stamp upon exchange (or purchase if buying in Japan). This requirement
is crucial, as only foreign tourists on a short-term visa are eligible for the pass.
JR Pass prices and types
The JR Pass comes in various types and durations, catering to different travel needs. Prices are subject to change, but here are the basic categories and
current pricing estimates:
🟡7-Day JR Pass:

🟡14-Day JR Pass:

The Ordinary Pass provides standard seating, while the Green Pass grants access to the first-class Green Car, which offers more spacious seating, quieter cars,
and additional amenities. The Green Pass can be an excellent choice during peak travel seasons, when regular seats may be crowded.
Discounts are available for children aged 6 to 11, and children under 6 can travel free if they do not require their own seat.
How to use Japan Rail Pass
Using the JR Pass is easy and flexible, giving travelers the freedom to explore Japan’s extensive rail network without the hassle of buying individual tickets.
・Step 1: Exchange Your Voucher for the JR Pass
Upon arriving in Japan, go to a designated JR ticket office to exchange your voucher for the physical JR Pass. You’ll need your passport and the voucher. During this process,
you’ll specify the activation date for the pass, which can be the current day or any date within the next 30 days.
・Step 2: Show the Pass at Ticket Gates
Unlike a regular ticket, the JR Pass does not go through automated gates. Instead, go to the manned gate next to the automated ticket gates and show your pass to the station
attendant, who will let you pass through. This process is the same every time you enter or exit a JR station.
・Step 3: Reserving Seats (Optional)
Seat reservations on JR trains are generally free with the JR Pass, but reservations are only needed for reserved cars on long-distance trains, including the Shinkansen. To
make a reservation, visit any JR ticket counter or use a JR ticket machine with an English option. Show your pass to the attendant, and they’ll issue you a reserved seat
ticket.
If you have a Green Pass, be sure to request Green Car seats for more comfortable travel. On many popular routes, such as the Tokaido Shinkansen, making reservations,
especially during peak travel times, is advisable to ensure you get a seat.
・Step 4: Boarding the Shinkansen and Other Trains
After reserving your seat, head to the designated platform and car number shown on your ticket. Platforms have signs indicating each car number, making it easy to find the correct
boarding spot. If you’re traveling in a non-reserved car, line up at any car marked for “Non-Reserved Seats,” which are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
・Step 5: Traveling with Flexibility
One of the best features of the JR Pass is its flexibility. As long as you’re traveling within the JR network and valid lines, you can hop on and off JR trains at your convenience.
You don’t need to revalidate the pass for each journey within the active period, which makes it ideal for travelers who want to explore multiple destinations with ease.
